Why I Do This Work
Before becoming a dietitian, I worked as a software consultant. While the work was analytical and served my nerdy brain, it lacked meaning for me.
Two experiences shifted everything: seeing how nutrition supported my dad’s quality of life during terminal cancer, and personally learning the hard way how poor fueling can derail performance during endurance training.
Those experiences sparked a deep curiosity about how the body responds to stress, training, and nutrition. I earned my Master’s degree in Food Science and Human Nutrition from Colorado State University and went on to specialize in sports nutrition.
Eventually, I built The Nutrition Mechanic to do the work I care most about: helping active and athletic people fuel in a way that is life-changing AND supportive of a lifetime full of adventure.
Walking the Talk
I don’t just coach endurance athletes, I live the process myself. I’ve competed in marathons, ultrarunning events, triathlons, and cycling events, and I’ve supported athletes behind the scenes at some of the toughest endurance events in the world. These experiences help shape how I approach fueling, recovery, and long-term performance.
I understand the demands of training, the mental load of chasing goals, and the challenge of balancing sport with the rest of life. That perspective matters even more as bodies, priorities, and recovery needs change over time.
While I work with all levels of athletes, from the recreational to the professional, some of the recent athletes I’ve worked with include:
Kim Levinsky, who set the women’s FKT for the 358-mile Long Path in New York in July 2023
Syd & Macky, professional mountain bikers
Kevin Goldberg, multiple 200+ mile finisher
Anna Strehlow, professional triathlete
Megan Eckert, elite ultrarunner
Don Reichelt, elite ultrarunner
I’m the co-host of the Inside Sports Nutrition podcast with colleague Bob Seebohar, where we explore sports nutrition topics through an evidence-informed yet “real life” lens.
I’ve also contributed to podcasts, webinars, conferences, and publications focused on endurance sport, fueling, and menopause health. At the core of all of this work is the same goal: helping active people cut through noise, understand their unique needs better, and create nutrition frameworks they can actually sustain.
Is This the Right Fit?
If you’re an active adult or endurance athlete who wants clear, individualized nutrition guidance that evolves with you, you’re in the right place.
“When we honor health as our foundation for longevity, nutrition is a key contributor to the successes we reap in our life journey.”
““I’ve been plagued for years with stomach issues during my ultras, so I contacted Dina to help me with my nutrition plan for an upcoming 100mile ultra. I quickly learned why she is called The Mechanic, and as a good mechanic would do, she first listened to all of my nutrition and race history, then diagnosed and came up with a detailed hydration and food plan for my race that actually worked. I’ve worked with other nutritionists and experts in the past, but Dina’s experience from crewing and working with a variety of endurance athletes really stands apart.””
